1. Hong Kong Blood Opera … Not for the Faint of Heart … 2012

Deranged five-piece punk-hardcore-posthardcore band from Mexico City. I’m angry with this, and I love it. Feels like the soundtrack to a night out smashing windows.

  2. Passion Pit … Gossamer … 2012

If Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs focused more on melody than on percussion, she might sound a bit like Michael Angelakos of Passion Pit. Gorgeous pop with falsetto male vocals and intricate, sugary beats deals with subjects as heavy as immigration, alcoholism, economic disparity, suicide, mental illness, drugs, and domestic abuse. 3. Rachel Sermanni … Black Currents … 2012

20-year-old Scottish singer Rachel Sermanni finger-picks and singers her heart out on this album. Really great.

  4. Lucero … Women & Work … 2012

Great, great new album from one of the hardest working rock bands around. Dirty and loud enough to fill up every dive bar in Tennessee.

  5. Goldfrapp … The Singles … 2012

A collection of singles from UK synthpop duo. Lots of catchy songs. I think the first one was featured in a car commercial. If the cover was any less enticing I might not wanna listen to it. But still, give it a try.
