Hunx … Hairdresser Blues … 2012

Half-hearted, whiny vocals and minimal rock instrumentation. Yet somehow Hunx is a strangely compelling pop songwriter.

Bowerbirds … The Clearing … 2012

Bowerbirds’ third LP is notably more rounded and full. Though this duo turned hippie band has always cultivated a minimalist vision, weaving ideas of nature and belonging into quiet, clear melodies; The Clearing is just a bit more sonically diverse and bombastic. Rich and guttural yet characteristically restrained, these songs are not for the jaded but for the young and curious- those unwary of zealous odes where the melancholic and the impassioned emotions meet back on the other side. A few songs on the album burn bright and shine on their own, but if experience is any guide, the true gems of a Bowerbirds record will likely take time to unearth themselves.

Gonjasufi … MU.ZZ.LE … 2012

This cat is a yoga instructor turned psych-hip-hop folk artist. He specializes in left-field wonked-out bliss that befuddles anyone looking for genre tags. Kinda like a Mody/Sufjan/Eels burrito. Nothing terribly groundbreaking but well done.

Polica … Give You the Ghost … 2012

All synth, light autotune, and rhythmic confusion - Policia is intense and layered in emotion. Its dance pop meets the Bon Iver brand of sadness. Best of all its from GAYNGS contributors.

Of Montreal … Paralytic Stalks … 2012

Kevin Barnes is that weirdo theater freak from your high school. And he’s a genius. Everything he produces is f**king brilliant and epic, he always goes big. This new album from Of Montreal is no exception. Every song is a manic showtune on steroids, or acid, or some kind of drug. I don’t even know justlisten to it!
